Aga Khan School, Osh hosts first-ever STEAM Festival
On 21 February, the Aga Khan School (AKS), Osh hosted its first-ever STEAM Festival, making it also the first school in the city to host such a festival.
This festival focused on science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) and showcased an array of projects done by students in Grades 5-11. Around 250 people attended the event, including students, teachers, parents, neighbouring government schools, university and college professors, representatives from international non-government organisations, and more. The school also hosted guests from the Aga Khan Development Network’s (AKDN) Kyrgyz Republic office.
“This STEAM festival was held in an atmosphere of creativity, which we really liked,” said Elena Narimanova, a secondary school librarian who was a guest at the event. “It is clear that [this] [event serves as] a modern educational platform [and] that [the school] hosts useful and exciting events. I liked everything very much.”
The culmination of the event featured students being awarded for their projects, which were assessed by a special panel of judges consisting of parents.
“I really liked the STEAM Festival, because it served as a career choice roadmap for students like me who are not yet clear on their future profession,” said Grade 9 student Aliya Sovetbekova. “I participated in the festival, designed and created images. For me, it was quite useful as I gained a lot of experience.”
This festival is one of the many initiatives done by AKS, Osh to promote STEAM learning. The school’s teachers and leadership team are also participating in professional development workshops and programmes to develop their knowledge in these fields, such as the school’s school director attending a STEAM festival in September in Astana, Kazakhstan.
